I had considered but rejected applying for CO status (I philosophically endorsed WWII), and yet I objected to the Vietnam war. When I got a lowish (under 100) number, I also applied to the US Coast Guard (my option if Graduate School did not get me a deferment) but was not accepted. When called by the draft board, I claimed a deferment based upon my wife’s health, and that allowed me to finish graduate school at Harvard and to take a teaching job in Massachusetts, where I have lived since 1969.
