I did not feel that my lottery number was high enough. I had a wife and baby, but that did not defer me since I had had a student deferment. All the army reserves were full and had waiting lists. One of my fellow management trainees told me about a Marine Corps Reserve unit that he had joined. He thought they had openings, so I went out and joined a reserve Marine Corps helicopter squadron. I had to go through regular Marine boot camp, and I lost 48 pounds in 10 weeks. I never saw myself as the Marine type, but I reached the rank of Sergeant E-5 before I was honorably discharged.
