Although I now live in England, I lived in Buffalo, NY, USA throughout the Vietnam War.  I was never sorry that I got out of going to war with a high number, 358.  I have composed lyrics to "I’ll Be Home For Christmas" for those who got exempted with high numbers.  It’s even more appropriate for those with high numbers in the 1969 draft lottery because it was an early December lottery.

I’ll be home for Christmas
And the next one after.
That’s because I drew a high number in the draft lottery.
I’m so full of joy now
Because I’m exempt from war now.
I’ll be home for Christmas
Because I don’t have to go to war.
I have also composed a version of it for those with low draft numbers who fled to Canada.

I’ll be in Canada for Christmas
And for the rest of my life now.
That’s because I drew a low number in the draft lottery.
I am so terrified of war now.
That’s why I must leave my country.
I’ll be in Canada for Christmas
Because I am dodging the draft.
