At the time of the draft, I was a senior at UNC and planning to get married and go to graduate school after graduation.  I had mixed emotions about the war, but would have served if I had been unlucky with the lottery.  My friends and I were all sweating the lottery and hoping we would get lucky.  As it turned out, my number was in the 240’s…I did get lucky although I often wonder what a stint in the military would have done for me or to me.

I graduated in May, was married soon after and entered graduate school in the fall.  I have had a great life and have been blessed with a great family.

I think the present system of voluntary military service is very unfair.  On the other hand, I’m glad my son doesn’t have to worry about the draft.
